We are honored to announce that Dr. Nyoki Cosey-Brown is a contributing author to the Specialized Practice Curricular Guide for Disaster Relief Social Work, Volume 2, published by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). This national-level resource supports social work educators and programs in preparing students to ethically and effectively respond to disasters and large-scale crises.
About the CSWE Disaster Relief Curricular Guide
The Disaster Relief Curricular Guide was developed to align disaster-focused social work education with the 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). As communities across the country face increasing natural disasters, public health emergencies, and complex humanitarian crises, this guide serves as a vital tool for strengthening the social work workforce.
Volume 2 focuses on advanced practice competencies, including engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation in disaster settings. It also elevates the importance of self-care and compassion as core professional competencies,
recognizing the emotional and ethical demands placed on social workers responding to crisis.
Rooted in Lived Experience and Professional Practice
Dr. Nyoki’s contribution is grounded in both scholarship and lived experience. Residing in New Orleans, she experienced another major hurricane during her first fall semester of doctoral study. That experience, combined with the strong academic foundation and mentorship she received during her program, shaped her interest and confidence in contributing to disaster relief education.
Her participation in this national task force reflects a long-standing commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and community-centered approaches to mental health and disaster response.
